Background of the Study
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition triggered by experiencing or witnessing traumatic events, leading to symptoms such as flashbacks, severe anxiety, and uncontrollable thoughts about the event. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a well-established, evidence-based treatment for PTSD, focusing on modifying dysfunctional emotions, behaviors, and thoughts through a goal-oriented, systematic approach. Nurse-led CBT interventions have been effective in various settings, improving patient outcomes in mental health care.
In Jigawa State, Nigeria, access to mental health professionals is limited, making it essential to explore alternative approaches to deliver effective mental health care. Empowering nurses to lead CBT sessions could bridge this gap, providing accessible and cost-effective treatment options for PTSD patients. This study aims to assess the impact of nurse-led CBT on patients with PTSD in Jigawa State.
Statement of the Problem
The scarcity of mental health professionals in Jigawa State poses a significant barrier to effective PTSD treatment. Traditional therapy models often rely on psychiatrists and psychologists, who are in short supply in this region. Consequently, many PTSD patients do not receive timely or adequate care, leading to chronic mental health issues and diminished quality of life. Implementing nurse-led CBT could mitigate this problem by utilizing the existing nursing workforce to deliver essential mental health services.
Objectives of the Study
1. To evaluate the effectiveness of nurse-led CBT in reducing PTSD symptoms among patients in Jigawa State.
2. To assess patient satisfaction with nurse-led CBT interventions.
3. To identify challenges faced by nurses in delivering CBT for PTSD patients.
Research Questions
1. How effective is nurse-led CBT in alleviating PTSD symptoms in patients within Jigawa State?
2. What is the level of patient satisfaction with nurse-led CBT services?
3. What challenges do nurses encounter when providing CBT to PTSD patients?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nurse-led CBT significantly reduces PTSD symptoms among patients in Jigawa State.
2. Patients report high satisfaction levels with nurse-led CBT interventions.
3. Nurses face identifiable challenges in delivering CBT to PTSD patients.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on patients diagnosed with PTSD receiving nurse-led CBT in selected healthcare facilities in Jigawa State. It will evaluate symptom reduction, patient satisfaction, and challenges encountered by nurses during therapy delivery. Limitations may include variability in nurses' CBT training levels and potential biases in self-reported patient satisfaction measures.
